What it means
Stigma is common toward mental illness, substance use, HIV, obesity and other conditions. It can make people hide their symptoms, avoid care and feel alone. Self-stigma is when a person comes to believe the negative labels about themselves.
For the nurse
Use person-first, respectful language ("a person with schizophrenia", not "a schizophrenic"), keep information private, and check your own beliefs so they do not affect care.
