symphysis

A joint where two bones are joined firmly by a pad of cartilage that allows only a little movement.

SIM-fih-sis noun

What it means

The best known is the symphysis pubis, where the two pubic bones meet at the front of the pelvis. In pregnancy it loosens so the pelvis can widen for birth. Fundal height is measured from the top of the symphysis pubis to the top of the uterus.
