What it means
An immunomodulator that also blocks the growth of new blood vessels. It was withdrawn in the 1960s after causing severe birth defects, such as missing or shortened limbs, and returned later under strict controls. It also raises the risk of blood clots and causes nerve damage, drowsiness and constipation.
For the nurse
It is given only through a restricted program: pregnancy tests and two reliable forms of birth control for anyone who can become pregnant, and condoms for males, since it passes into semen. Teach the client not to share it or donate blood, and to report leg swelling or chest pain.
