three times a day

A medication schedule in which a dose is given three times during the day, often written TID.

three tymz uh day noun

What it means

TID comes from the Latin ter in die. Each facility sets standard times for it, often with meals or at set hours such as 0900, 1300 and 1700. It is not the same as "every 8 hours" (q8h), which spaces doses evenly around the clock, including at night. Three times a week is a different order; ISMP advises writing it out in full rather than abbreviating it.

For the nurse

Give the dose at the facility's set times unless the order says every 8 hours. If an order is unclear about which schedule is meant, clarify it.
