What it means
To raise or lower a dose in small amounts while watching the client's response. IV drips are often titrated to a target, such as a blood pressure, heart rate or oxygen saturation. Oxygen can be titrated to a saturation goal. Some oral drugs are titrated up slowly over weeks to limit side effects.
For the nurse
Follow the order or protocol for the starting dose, how much to change it, how often and the target. Check the client's response (such as blood pressure) at each step and document each change.
In a chart
"Norepinephrine titrated per protocol to maintain MAP above 65 mm Hg."
