tonic neck reflex

A newborn reflex: when the baby's head turns toward one side, the arm and leg on that side stretch out while the opposite limbs bend.

TON-ik NEK REE-fleks noun

What it means

A primitive reflex, also called the asymmetric tonic neck reflex or "fencing" position, because the baby looks like a fencer. It is present in the first months and fades between about 4 and 7 months of age. A reflex that is missing, very strong, or lasts much longer can point to a nervous system problem.

For the nurse

Test it with the baby lying on the back by gently turning the head to one side, and compare both sides.
