tonsillitis

Inflammation of the tonsils, the two lumps of lymph tissue at the back of the throat.

ton-sih-LY-tis noun

Word parts

tonsill/o tonsil-itis inflammation

What it means

Usually caused by a virus, and sometimes by group A strep bacteria. The tonsils become red and swollen, sometimes with white patches, causing sore throat, painful swallowing and fever. Repeated or severe tonsillitis may be treated by removing the tonsils (tonsillectomy).

For the nurse

After a tonsillectomy, watch for bleeding: frequent swallowing, clearing the throat, or vomiting bright red blood. Give cool, soft foods and fluids, avoid red-colored drinks and straws, and discourage coughing and throat clearing.
