What it means
In nursing care, a soft-bristled toothbrush is the standard tool for mouth care. Clients at risk of bleeding, such as those with a low platelet count, may need an extra-soft brush or foam swabs. Brushing the teeth of clients on ventilators and those who cannot do it themselves helps prevent pneumonia.
For the nurse
Help or supervise brushing twice a day, and teach clients to replace a toothbrush about every 3 to 4 months or after an illness.
