What it means
An antiseizure drug that also prevents migraines and is combined with phentermine for weight loss (Qsymia). Common effects are tingling in the hands and feet, slowed thinking and word-finding trouble, loss of appetite and weight loss. It can cause kidney stones, metabolic acidosis and a sudden rise in eye pressure.
For the nurse
Teach the client to drink plenty of fluids, to report eye pain or sudden blurred vision at once, and not to stop it suddenly. It can make hormonal birth control less effective and can harm a fetus.
