What it means

An operation, usually for an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasiabee-NINE proh-STAT-ik hy-per-PLAY-zhuhA prostate gland that has grown larger than normal, from growth that is not cancer.hyper- more than normalplas growth or formation-ia conditionFull entry ), that trims away the inner prostate tissue pressing on the urethra. No cut is made in the skin: the surgeon works through a scope in the penis. Afterward the client has a three-way urinary catheter, often with continuous bladder irrigation to wash out blood and clots.

For the nurse

Pink to light red urine is expected at first; report bright red urine, thick clots, or a catheter that stops draining. Keep the irrigation running fast enough to keep urine light, count irrigation fluid out of the output, and watch for bladder spasms.

In a chart

"Post-TURP day 1: continuous bladder irrigation running, urine light pink with no clots."
