What it means
Also called a leiomyoma or myoma. Fibroids are very common, can be single or many, and range from tiny to very large. Many cause no problems; others cause heavy or long periods, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, or problems getting pregnant. They often shrink after menopause.
For the nurse
Ask about how heavy and how long periods are, and check for anemia from blood loss. Teach about the treatment choices, which range from watching and waiting to medicines, procedures that shrink the fibroids, or surgery.
