verbal order

An order for a treatment or drug that a provider speaks aloud, in person or by phone, instead of writing or entering it.

VER-bul OR-der noun

What it means

An order given by voice. Because spoken words are easy to mishear, agencies allow verbal orders only when needed, such as in an emergency or when the provider cannot enter the order. A telephone order is a kind of verbal order. The provider must sign or confirm it within the time the agency sets.

For the nurse

Write the order down at once, read it back in full to the provider and get their confirmation, and spell out drug names and numbers. Many agencies do not accept verbal orders for chemotherapy.
