What it means
Whole grains such as brown rice, oats, whole wheat and barley have more fiber, vitamins and minerals than refined grains like white flour and white rice. A diet rich in them helps prevent constipation and lowers the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
For the nurse
Teach clients to look for "whole" as the first ingredient on the label, and to add fiber slowly with plenty of fluids.
