What it means
A leukotriene receptor antagonist taken twice a day for long-term asthma control. It prevents symptoms but does not stop an attack that has started. It can rarely injure the liver and can raise the effect of warfarin.
For the nurse
Give it at least 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after one, since food lowers how much is absorbed. Teach the client to keep a rescue inhaler and to report upper right belly pain, dark urine or yellow skin.
