What it means
A time of fast physical, emotional and social change. Puberty brings growth spurts and sexual development. In Erikson's theory, the task is identity versus role confusion: working out who one is. Friends become very important, and teens begin to think in abstract ways. Risk-taking, such as with driving, alcohol, drugs and sex, often rises.
For the nurse
Offer part of the visit alone with the teen, explain what can be kept confidential and what cannot, and ask in a nonjudging way about mood, safety, substances and sexual health.
