What it means
The stage after infancy, when a child learns to walk, talk and do more alone. In Erikson's theory the task is autonomy versus shame and doubt: toddlers want to do things themselves and say "no" often, and temper tantrums are common. They play side by side with other children rather than together (parallel play). Toilet training usually happens in this stage.
For the nurse
Safety teaching is a priority: falls, drowning, poisoning, choking on small objects and foods, and car seats. Offer simple choices to give a sense of control, keep routines, and let a parent stay during care when possible.
