What it means

Without these cells, the body cannot fight infection, and even a small one can become life-threatening. It is most often a rare reaction to a drug, such as clozapine, some antithyroid drugs (methimazole, propylthiouracil) or chemotherapy.

For the nurse

Clients on clozapine have regular blood counts. Teach clients on these drugs to report a sore throat, fever or other signs of infection right away.
