alignment

The correct lining up of body parts or of the pieces of a broken bone.

uh-LYN-ment noun

What it means

Body alignment means positioning the client so the head, spine and limbs are in a straight, natural line, which eases strain and helps prevent pressure injuries and joint damage. In bone care, alignment means the broken ends are lined up so the bone heals straight.

For the nurse

When turning or moving a client, keep the spine straight and support the limbs with pillows. After spinal surgery or injury, logroll the client so the body turns as one unit.
