What it means
Hair loss, in patches or all over. It can come from genes (male- and female-pattern baldness), an immune condition that attacks hair roots (alopecia areata), stress, thyroid disease, iron deficiency, tight hairstyles and some drugs, most famously chemotherapy. Hair lost from chemotherapy usually grows back after treatment ends, sometimes a different color or texture.
For the nurse
Prepare clients starting chemotherapy for hair loss, which often begins two to three weeks into treatment. Suggest a short haircut, a soft brush, sun protection and a hat or scarf, and offer information about wigs. Allow time to talk about body image.
