What it means
A person's overall opinion of their own worth. Illness, injury, changes in body image, loss of a job or role, and abuse can lower it. Low self-esteem shows in negative talk about oneself, poor eye contact and trouble making decisions, and it goes with depression and other mental health problems.
For the nurse
Encourage the client to name strengths, give honest praise for real progress, and include them in decisions about their care.
