coping

The thoughts and actions a person uses to manage stress, problems and strong emotions.

KOH-ping noun

What it means

How people deal with stress. Healthy coping includes talking with others, problem-solving, exercise, prayer or meditation, and asking for help. Unhealthy coping includes denial that goes on too long, withdrawal from others, and alcohol or drug use. Illness, loss and hospital stays all test a person's coping, and nurses often assess and support it.

For the nurse

Ask how the client has handled hard times before, build on what worked, and offer support resources. Note signs of ineffective coping, such as not sleeping, missing care or using alcohol.
