What it means
Relaxation techniques lower stress, anxiety and pain, and can slow the heart and breathing rate. Examples are slow deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation (tensing and then relaxing each muscle group), guided imagery, music, meditation and massage. They are nondrug methods that can be used alongside medicines.
For the nurse
Teach a simple method before it is needed, such as before surgery or labor, and practice it with the client. Make the setting quiet and comfortable.
