What it means
In mental health, depression (major depressive disorder) is a low mood or loss of pleasure that lasts at least two weeks, with changes such as poor sleep or too much sleep, appetite and weight change, tiredness, feelings of worthlessness, trouble concentrating and thoughts of death. It is treated with talk therapy, antidepressants and other methods. In other phrases the word means a lowering, as in respiratory depression or ST depression on an ECG.
For the nurse
Ask directly about thoughts of suicide; asking does not plant the idea. Risk can rise as energy returns in the first weeks of antidepressant treatment. Encourage small daily tasks, food, fluids and rest.
