What it means
A central nervous system stimulant that raises dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Prescribed forms treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy; a common product, Adderall, mixes amphetamine with dextroamphetamine. Side effects include trouble sleeping, poor appetite, weight loss, fast heart rate, high blood pressure and nervousness. It is a Schedule II controlled substance because it can be misused; methamphetamine is a related illegal drug.
For the nurse
Give doses in the morning to avoid insomnia. Check blood pressure, heart rate, weight and, in children, growth. Teach that the drug must be stored safely and never shared.
