Word parts
What it means
Antiseptics are used for hand hygiene and to clean skin before injections, IV starts and surgery. Common ones are alcohol, chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine. Products used to kill germs on objects and surfaces, rather than skin, are called disinfectants.
For the nurse
Let the antiseptic dry fully on the skin before inserting a needle or catheter, as the product directs, so it can work. Ask about allergies, such as to iodine products or chlorhexidine.
