What it means
A neurodevelopmental disorder that begins before age 12 and often lasts into adulthood. There are three presentations: mainly inattentive, mainly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. It can affect school, work and relationships. Treatment includes behavior therapy, school support and drugs such as stimulants (methylphenidatemeth-ul-FEN-ih-daytA central nervous system stimulant used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy.Full entry , amphetamines) or non-stimulants.
For the nurse
Give stimulants in the morning to avoid trouble sleeping. Check growth (height and weight), appetite, heart rate and blood pressure. Stimulants are controlled substances: teach families to store them safely.
