What it means
A state that builds up when demands stay high for a long time without enough rest or support. A person with burnout feels drained, becomes distant or cynical about the work and the people in it, and feels they are no longer doing a good job. Nurses and family caregivers are at high risk, and burnout can lead to errors and to leaving the profession.
For the nurse
Watch for signs of burnout in yourself and your coworkers. Rest, breaks, healthy boundaries, peer support and asking for help all lower the risk.
