capsule

A drug form in which medicine is held inside a small shell, usually of gelatin, that is swallowed.

KAP-sul noun

What it means

Some capsules are made to release the drug slowly or only after passing the stomach (extended-release or delayed-release). The word also means a layer of tissue that wraps an organ or joint, such as the joint capsule.

For the nurse

Do not open or crush extended-release or delayed-release capsules unless the drug label or pharmacist says it is safe. Ask the pharmacist about another form for a client who cannot swallow capsules.
