What it means
One cubic centimeter holds exactly the same volume as one milliliter. ISMP lists "cc" as error-prone: when handwritten it has been read as "u" (units), causing dosing errors. Write "mL" instead.
For the nurse
Write and say mL. If an order uses cc, read it as mL only after confirming the order is clear, and clarify anything doubtful with the prescriber.
