clinical judgment

The way a nurse notices, makes sense of and acts on information about a client to decide on the best care.

KLIN-ih-kul JUJ-ment noun

What it means

The thinking that turns data into decisions. The NCLEX tests it with the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, which breaks it into six steps: recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action and evaluate outcomes. Next Generation NCLEX case studies follow these steps in order.

For the nurse

When a question asks what the nurse should do, first ask which findings matter (cues), what they could mean, which problem is most urgent, and what action fits. Then decide how you would know if it worked.
