common cold

A mild viral infection of the nose and throat.

KOM-un KOHLD noun

What it means

An upper respiratory infection caused by many different viruses, most often rhinoviruses. It spreads by droplets and by hands that touch the nose or eyes after touching a contaminated surface. A runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough usually last about a week to 10 days. Antibiotics do not help, because a virus causes it.

For the nurse

Teach rest, fluids, hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes. Tell parents not to give over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to young children unless a provider advises it.
