sneezing

A sudden, forceful burst of air out through the nose and mouth, set off by irritation inside the nose.

SNEE-zing noun

What it means

A reflex that clears the nose of dust, pollen, germs or other irritants. It is common with colds and allergies. A sneeze sprays droplets that can carry germs a short distance, which is why sneezing spreads respiratory infections.

For the nurse

Teach respiratory hygiene: sneeze into a tissue or the inside of the elbow, throw the tissue away and clean the hands.
