Dictionary

developmental

Relating to how a person grows and changes in body, mind and behavior across their life.

dih-vel-up-MEN-tul adjective

What it means

Used for anything about growth and development. Developmental milestones are skills most children gain at about the same age, such as sitting, walking and talking. A developmental delay is when a child reaches these later than expected, and a developmental stage is a period of life with its own typical tasks, such as toddlerhood or adolescence.

For the nurse

Plan care and teaching for a client's developmental level, not just their age: a frightened 6-year-old may need the approach used for a younger child. Report missed milestones at well-child visits.
