What it means
A disability can be present from birth or come from illness, injury or aging, and it can be visible, such as needing a wheelchair, or invisible, such as chronic pain or a learning disability. How much it limits a person depends a lot on their surroundings and support. In the US, the Americans with Disabilities Act protects people with disabilities from discrimination.
For the nurse
Use person-first or identity-first language as the client prefers, ask what help they want rather than assuming, and make sure equipment and teaching are accessible.
