elective surgery

Surgery that is planned and scheduled ahead of time because it is not an emergency.

ih-LEK-tiv SUR-juh-ree noun

What it means

An operation that can be booked in advance, such as a joint replacement, a hernia repair or cataract surgery. "Elective" does not mean the surgery is unneeded, only that waiting a while will not cause harm. Urgent surgery is needed within hours to days, and emergency surgery is needed right away.

For the nurse

Planned surgery leaves time for teaching, testing and getting the client ready, such as stopping some drugs and fasting as instructed.
