What it means
An enema may be given to empty the bowel (a cleansing enema of water, saline or a ready-made solution), to soften hard stool (an oil retention enema) or to give a medicine. Some tests and surgeries call for "enemas until clear", given until the fluid comes back without stool.
For the nurse
Place the client on the left side (Sims positionSIMZ puh-ZISH-unA side-lying position on the left side with the upper leg bent and the lower arm behind the body.Full entry ) so the fluid follows the shape of the colon. Lubricate the tip and insert it gently, about 7.5 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inches) in an adult. If cramping starts, slow or pause the flow. Enemas are avoided in clients with very low platelets or white cells and after some rectal surgeries.
