What it means
Named after J. Marion Sims, a 19th-century American surgeon. The client lies on the left side, rolled partly toward the stomach, with the right knee drawn up and the left arm behind. It is used for enemas, rectal medicines and rectal exams, and for comfort.
For the nurse
Use the left side for an enema so the fluid follows the shape of the colon. Support the upper leg with a pillow.
