What it means
Also called a transfer belt. It gives the caregiver a safe handhold to guide and support a client during transfers and walking, rather than pulling on the client's arms or clothes. It is put on over clothing, snug but with room to slide flat fingers underneath.
For the nurse
Walk slightly behind and to the client's weaker side, holding the belt from underneath. If the client starts to fall, do not try to hold them up: widen your stance and ease them down to the floor while protecting the head. Avoid using it over a fresh abdominal or chest wound or a feeding tube.
