mechanical lift

A device with a sling that lifts and moves a client who cannot bear weight, such as from bed to chair.

muh-KAN-ih-kul LIFT noun

What it means

Lifts can be on wheels on the floor or fixed to the ceiling, and are often called by a brand name such as Hoyer. The client is positioned in a sling, which hooks to the lift; the lift raises the client so staff can move them without lifting by hand. Using lifts protects both clients and staff from injury.

For the nurse

Check the client's weight against the lift's limit and choose the right sling size. Most facilities require two staff. Lock the wheels of the bed and chair, explain each step, and lower the client slowly.
