What it means
An antifungal that builds up in new keratin, the protein of skin, hair and nails, so new growth resists the fungus. It is a common choice for ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) in children. Treatment lasts weeks to months. It can cause headache, stomach upset, sun sensitivity and, rarely, liver or blood problems.
For the nurse
Give it with a fatty meal, such as with milk or ice cream, to help absorption. Teach the family to finish the full course, to use sun protection, and that it can make hormonal birth control less effective.
