What it means
More than being able to read: it includes understanding numbers (doses, lab values), following instructions, filling in forms and asking questions. Low health literacy is common, even among people who read well, and is linked to more hospital stays, more medication errors and poorer health. Stress, illness and a new language make it harder for anyone.
For the nurse
Use plain words, short sentences and pictures, focus on two or three key points, and check understanding with the teach-back method: ask the client to explain in their own words or show you how. Offer written material at a low reading level and in the client's language.
