What it means
Passed in 1996, HIPAA sets national rules for who may see and share a client's health information, and gives clients the right to see their own records. Health workers may look at and share only the information they need for their job ("minimum necessary"). Breaking the rules can lead to fines, job loss and other penalties.
For the nurse
Look only at the records of clients you are caring for, do not discuss clients in public places, log off computers, and never post about clients on social media, even without names. Share information only with people the client has allowed.
