What it means
An operation, and the opening (stoma) it makes, in which the last part of the small intestine, the ileumIL-ee-umThe last and longest part of the small intestine, which joins the large intestine.Full entry , is brought out through the abdominal wall. Stool collects in a pouch worn over the stoma. Because it bypasses the colon, where water is absorbed, the output is liquid to mushy and comes often. It may be temporary or permanent, for example after the colon is removed for ulcerative colitis.
For the nurse
A healthy stoma is pink to red and moist. Ileostomy output contains digestive enzymes that burn the skin, so keep the pouch sealed and the skin around it clean and dry. Watch intake and output closely, since clients lose fluid and electrolytes easily, and teach them to drink plenty of fluids and chew food well.
