What it means
Most often used for the effects of alcohol or drugs, such as slurred speech, poor coordination, changes in mood and judgment, and in severe cases slowed breathing and unconsciousness. The signs depend on the substance and the amount. Water intoxication is a different use: too much water drunk too fast, which dilutes the blood's sodium.
For the nurse
Keep an intoxicated client safe: protect the airway, check breathing and level of consciousness often, and prevent falls. Do not assume confusion is only from alcohol; check blood glucose and look for head injury.
