lithotomy

A position lying on the back with the hips and knees bent and the legs raised and spread apart, often in stirrups.

lih-THOT-uh-mee noun

Word parts

lith/o stone-tomy cutting into

What it means

Used for pelvic exams, childbirth, and gynecologic, urologic and rectal procedures. The word first meant an operation to cut out a stone from the bladder, which was done in this position, so the position took its name. Staying in it for long can strain the hips and back, press on nerves in the legs and slow blood flow.

For the nurse

Raise and lower both legs together, slowly, to protect the hips and back and to avoid a sudden drop in blood pressure. Pad the stirrups and check that nothing presses on the outside of the knee, where a leg nerve runs close to the skin.
