Word parts
What it means
The body does not get the nutrients it needs, or gets too much of some. Undernutrition is most common in hospital: from poor appetite, trouble chewing or swallowing, illness that raises needs, poverty or poor absorption. It slows wound healing, weakens the immune system and muscles, and raises the risk of pressure injuries. Overnutrition (obesity) is also a form of malnutrition.
For the nurse
Screen new clients for weight loss and poor intake, weigh them regularly, record how much of each meal is eaten, and refer to a dietitian.
