What it means
Nicotine is a stimulant that reaches the brain within seconds of inhaling. It raises heart rate and blood pressure and narrows blood vessels. It causes strong dependence, and stopping brings cravings, irritability, anxiety and trouble concentrating. Nicotine replacement products, such as patches, gum and lozenges, give a controlled dose without the smoke while a person quits.
For the nurse
Ask every client about tobacco and vaping, advise quitting, and offer help and referral. Rotate nicotine patch sites and teach the client not to smoke while using one.
