What it means
atherosclerosisath-er-oh-skluh-ROH-sisA buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) inside the walls of the arteries.ather/o fatty pastescler/o hard-osis conditionFull entry in the arteries of the limbs cuts down blood flow, especially when the muscles need more during activity. Common findings are leg pain or cramping with walking that eases with rest (intermittent claudication), weak or absent pulses, cool, shiny, hairless skin, and wounds on the feet that heal slowly. Smoking and diabetes are the strongest risk factors.
For the nurse
Check pulses, skin color, temperature and capillary refill in both legs. Teach smoking cessation, a regular walking program, daily foot checks and well-fitting shoes; do not raise the legs above heart level unless ordered, since this can lower blood flow to them.
