What it means
The part of communication that is not spoken words. Body language, facial expression, how close people stand, silence and touch all send messages, often more strongly than words. When a client's words and body language do not match, such as saying "I'm fine" while grimacing, the nonverbal message is often the truer one. Its meaning differs between cultures.
For the nurse
Sit at the client's eye level, face them, keep an open posture and use appropriate eye contact. Watch the client's face and body for pain or worry, and gently name what you see: "You look worried."
