omega-3 fatty acid

A kind of healthy unsaturated fat found in oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts and some plant oils.

oh-MAY-guh THREE FAT-ee AS-id noun

What it means

Fats the body needs but cannot make enough of. The main ones are EPA and DHA, found in salmon, sardines, mackerel and fish oil, and ALA, found in flaxseed, chia, walnuts and canola oil. They help build cell membranes, including in the brain and eyes, and prescription doses lower high blood triglycerides.

For the nurse

Ask about fish oil supplements, which clients may not think of as medicine. Teach that eating fish twice a week is part of a heart-healthy diet.
